My letter to Verizon

Subject: Calling Verizon

To all whom this concerns at Verizon,

Your TV ad for the new LG Dare cell phone is a disgraceful attempt to grab thrill seeking eyeballs for corporate profits.
To portray a breed of dog as aggressive and vicious is serving to alienate many outraged Verizon customers concerned about the humane treatment of all dogs and the negative message you are sending!

Furthermore, your brand of gimmick advertising serves to bolster negative breed stereotypes of the American Pit Bull Terrier (aka Pit Bull). This breed already suffers from being demonized by myths, public misconceptions and legislative ignorance regarding dog behavior. Irresponsible ads like yours seek to credit and promote these stereotypes.

As a loyal Verizon customer for years, I feel compelled to cancel my accounts (both business and personal) unless you pull this ad immediately. Exploiting the plight of dogs who suffer as a result of media sensationalism and animal abuse will not be tolerated by a society moving forward to promote animal welfare issues.

Do the right thing.
Dare to admit the ad was a mistake!

Yours truly,

Paula Terifaj DVM

My Take on BSL and Dog Bites Sunday, Jun 8 2008

Recently in the United States, a number of municipalities, counties and states have decided that the best way to control aggressive dogs and dog bites is to outlaw or severely restrict certain breeds such as pit bulls. I am against any breed specific legislation. With that said, I must say that I agree that certain laws, such as leash laws, need to be in place for all dogs.

The problem comes when you decide that laws should only affect certain breeds. It is the same as trying to pass laws that affect only one race of people or one sex or one religion. It is just plain wrong.

I own five pit bulls because I am a breeder. I consider myself a responsible breeder because I screen potential buyers for my puppies and I only breed registered dogs with proven pedigrees. Anyone who purchases a dog from me must sign a contract. Some of the points covered in the contract are training requirements, proper housing, proper socialization and proper breeding. My contract states that if I find out that the dog is being used illegally or being mistreated or if any portion of the contract is broken that I can come get the dog immediately.

It is my stand on the subject of BSL that dog owners and breeders all need to be held accountable for being responsible dog owners and breeders. A good breeder is one who is available to help new dog owners properly train and care for their dog. A responsible owner socializes and trains the dog so that new situations don’t startle the dog.

If all breeders and owners would act responsibly, the number of dog attacks would be greatly reduced. If you want to read more about the affects, causes and examples of BSL, you can check out the articles on the Links page of my kennel site. You can find it at http://www.bluestunnakennels.com

I am a freelance writer and mom. I have two wonderful sons, a one year old and a six week old. Although they keep me fairly busy, I do have time to pursue my passion, writing.

I am going to keep this post short. Let me just say that you will find blogs about raising children, issues with dogs and financial ideas on my blog. I may throw in some other information every now and then. If you have any ideas, just let me know!
